KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is due to rule on a case involving CPN (Maoist Center) Vice Chairman Agni Sapkota and accusations relating to the murder of Arjun Lama from Kavre. The writ petition, which charges Sapkota and others of participation in the murder, was resolved on June 5. The hearing was ended by the Constitutional Bench, which was chaired by Chief Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha and included Justices Prakashman Singh Raut, Sapana Pradhan Malla, Prakash Kumar Dhungana, and Kumar Regmi. The ruling was previously planned for June 26. However, the ruling could not be given on that date because one of the judges was absent.

Purnimaya Lama, Arjun Lama's wife, filed the writ suit in November 2012, asking the Supreme Court to investigate the murder claims against Agni Sapkota and other politicians. There are three such writ petitions related to this case pending at the SC. The petitioners have urged the SC to order an investigation and the arrest of Agni Sapkota.

The respondents, who represent Sapkota and others, believe that the occurrence is subject to transitional justice systems because it happened during Nepal's war era. They argue that these methods, rather than traditional criminal trials, should be used to solve the issue.

Arjun Lama was purportedly kidnapped and slain on April 29, 2005, sparking legal and procedural issues over accountability and justice for activities performed during Nepal's turbulent war period.
