KATHMANDU: Authorities have seized Rs 1.2 million in cash from seven people who were involved in unlawful gambling in Kathmandu. The arrests took place at Kathmandu Metropolitan City's Bauddha Tinchuli, Ward 6.
Among those detained is Sonam Tamang, a 24-year-old from Amdo, China, who is identified as the main organizer of the gambling activities. Other arrested individuals include Jampa Khedup from India, Norbu Samden, and Dasang, both from China, as well as Wei Chunlin, another Chinese national, along with two Nepalis: Tenzing Norbu Sherpa and Lopsang Lama.
The arrests were made by a team from the Kathmandu Valley Investigation Office on Friday. The police acted on intelligence that led them to a gaming zone operated by Tamang on the second floor of Pushpa Lama's house in Bauddha.
Reports indicate that the gambling activities were in full swing at the time of the operation. A fish shooting game device was also confiscated from the location, in addition to the cash.
The presence of a gaming zone suggests a more organized gambling operation, potentially implicating broader networks in illegal activities. The police source mentioned that the arrests were made based on specific information received about the gambling taking place.
The operation serves as a reminder of the continued efforts being made by law authorities to stop illegal gambling in the capital, since these activities have sparked worries about the effects they may have on nearby towns.
Authorities are keeping an eye on the situation and may conduct more research to find out if there are any more people connected to the gaming network.
