KATHMANDU: Formed in the early 90s, 1974 A.D. stands as a leading supergroup captivating generations of Nepalese music lovers with their timeless melodies, patriotic anthems, reimagined folk tunes, and a diverse repertoire. The band holds a prestigious status in the country's music scene, paving the way for numerous other acts to follow. Initially starting as a cover band performing songs by renowned artists like Gary Moore, Deep Purple, and Bryan Adams, their debut album "Time Out" featured only two original tracks.
Despite undergoing multiple lineup changes, the core members of the group solidified post-1994. Founding members Phiroj Shyangden, Nirakar Yakthumba, and Bhanu A., alongside Adrian Pradhan, Sanjay Shrestha, Manoj Kumar KC, and Manose Singh, established 1974 A.D. as an iconic musical ensemble in Nepal. Their music blends Nepali folk, raga, rock, funk, blues, and jazz influences into a unique sound.
Facing the challenges of balancing teaching careers with their musical aspirations, the members made a collective decision to commit fully to the band, leaving behind their stable jobs. In an era where paying musicians for performances was rare and ticketed concerts lacked audience attendance, their dedication elevated the standard of music performance in Nepal. Despite skepticism, they persisted, pushing boundaries and becoming the voice of modern Nepal's social issues.
Their accomplishments include hosting the historic Rock Yatra concert in 2000, which drew over 60,000 attendees, and their song "Sambhodan" serving as a poignant reflection of the nation's sentiments after the Royal Massacre in 2001. In 2002, they became the first Nepalese band to tour 11 cities in the USA. With eight albums to their name, including "Nirantarta" released in 2019, the band has left an indelible mark on Nepali music.
In 2024, the veteran rockers embarked on a tour across five cities in America, kicking off at The Pourhouse in Minneapolis on May 11. Accompanied by the release of an official music video for the title track of their 2016 album "Hazar Sapana," featuring their classic instrumental arrangements and Adrian Pradhan's vocals, the band continues to captivate audiences with their timeless music and unwavering passion.
