KATHMANDU: As of Sunday, rice cultivation across Nepal has progressed to 38.6 percent, covering 539,766 hectares of land spread across all seven provinces. The Department of Agriculture reports varying levels of plantation completion across regions, with Sudur Paschim leading at 54.2 percent and Madhes at the lowest with 25.5 percent. Other province groups include 34%. 4% in Koshi, the rest 40. 2% in Bagmati, 49. 7% in Gandaki, 44. 9% in the Mechi zone, 4% in Lumbini, and only 2 percent in the Madhesh zone. 5 percent in Karnali. Rice is produced in 1398273 hectares in total; Madhes is in the first position with 383150 hectares. Province 5 is in the last position with 41904 hectares.
Comparatively, by July 9 last year, rice plantations had reached 42.9 percent across the country. Annually, Nepal produces an average of 5,700,000 metric tons of rice, while the demand is estimated at 6,200,000 metric tons, according to Tilak Raj Chaulagain, the Department's information officer.
