KATHMANDU: Today marks the start of Indra Jatra, a major celebration in the Kathmandu Valley. The celebration, which the Newar community refers to as Yenya Punhi, is devoted to Indra, the deity of rain and wealth.
The festivities commence with the erection of a pole bearing the Indra dwaja (flag) in front of Hanumandhoka in Basantapur. The eight-day celebration officially begins today.
Dances, chariot processions, and deity worship are among the customary activities that characterize the event. It occurs not just in Kathmandu, but also in the districts of Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Dolakha.
The main event of Indra Jatra is a parade of chariots carrying figures of Ganesha, Bhairav, and Kumari through Kathmandu's streets on Tuesday, September 17. This noteworthy occasion has attracted the attention of the Head of State and other dignitaries.
Basantapur Durbar Square will host a unique celebration to see these chariot processions. The festival is distinguished by its colorful cultural exhibition and substantial community involvement.
In commemoration of the event, the federal government declared Tuesday in the Kathmandu Valley a public holiday, allowing residents to participate in all the activities.
