KATHMANDU: The water level in the Bagmati River has surpassed the danger point at the Gaurighat water measuring station in Kathmandu, with the level continuing to rise as of 2:45 PM. The Flood Monitoring Hydrological Forecast Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued a caution notice urging vigilance in riverine areas extending up to Bagmati-Manohara Dobhan due to the elevated water levels.
The rising water levels are a result of the afternoon's intense rainfall in the Kathmandu Valley and its environs. Furthermore, the Barpak region of Gorkha has reported moderate rainfall, and more rainfall is anticipated. This could result in higher water levels in rivers like the Budhigandaki and Daraudi.
Recent moderate rain in Dhungre, Gobre, and nearby areas of Sindhupalchok has also prompted warnings from the DHM. The department has advised the public to take precautions, as water levels in smaller rivers like Melamchi and Indravati could rise, and there is an increased risk of landslides on steep terrains.
