KATHMANDU: In Bardibas, a proactive program has been initiated to battle dengue fever transmission, particularly since the monsoon season increases the danger of insect-borne infections. Bardibas, located between the Dhanusha and Sarlahi districts, has been found to be vulnerable to such illnesses.
The initiative comes in response to past outbreaks, with 847 cases of dengue reported in a single month since its detection in Bardibas in October 2017. Last year alone, 209 cases were recorded in the municipality. This year, although no dengue cases have been reported yet, health officials remain vigilant due to the prevalence of malaria, Kalaazar, chikungunya, and scrub typhus in the region during the rainy season.
Suresh Paswan, Coordinator of Bardibas Municipality’s Health Section, highlighted the early launch of an awareness program aimed at preventing disease spread. Health workers have been mobilized to implement a Search and Destroy Campaign targeting mosquito breeding sites. The effort requires strict training sessions for 30 participants from 21 health facilities across the municipality's 14 wards. Attendees received in-depth information on the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of dengue and other associated disorders.
Ram Babu Yadav, co-coordinator of the health section, emphasized the importance of heightened surveillance and public awareness. Plans are in place to conduct cleanliness drives and publicize preventive measures effectively. Additionally, mosquito control efforts, such as targeted spraying, are focused on wards identified as the most vulnerable.
In order to lessen the effects of dengue and other insect-borne illnesses in Bardibas, health professionals, stakeholders, and local authorities are working together to make sure the community is aware of the risks and is protected throughout the monsoon season.
