KATHMANDU: Some of the most prominent figures attending the Cannes Film Festival graced the 30th annual amfAR gala, a renowned event aimed at raising funds for AIDS research. Hosted by Demi Moore, whose film "The Substance" garnered attention at Cannes, this year's gala continued a tradition initiated by Elizabeth Taylor in 1993. The red carpet at the prestigious Hôtel du Cap, Eden Roc, was adorned with models, actors, singers, and fashion designers, along with notable figures from the festival scene, all eager to support the cause by securing tables at the highly anticipated event.
Among the attendees were Michelle Yeoh, Heidi Klum, Kelly Rowland, Andie MacDowell, Diane Kruger, Colman Domingo, Michelle Rodriguez, Winnie Harlow, Robin Thicke, Diplo, Paris Jackson, Petra Nemcova, Karolina Kurkova, Natasha Poly, and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. Rowland addressed a recent Cannes controversy, asserting her stance on boundaries and equality. Despite this, the night commenced with the customary champagne and cocktails, with guests enjoying the ambiance and seizing the opportunity for photographs and social media posts.
The evening featured an auction showcasing artworks and sculptures, including a hand-signed Andy Warhol lithograph of Taylor and a specially commissioned picture of the Queen adorned with Swarovski crystals, both fetching significant amounts for charity. As guests indulged in a gourmet dinner accompanied by live performances, highlights included a fashion runway show curated by Carine Roitfeld, featuring renowned designers such as Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton. Nick Jonas and Cher entertained the audience with electrifying performances, setting the stage for a lively afterparty by the hotel's swimming pool, where guests danced until dawn.
amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, has been instrumental in supporting AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and advocacy since 1985, raising nearly $900 million to date. The gala serves as a testament to the ongoing commitment of celebrities and philanthropists to combat the global AIDS epidemic and advance vital research initiatives.
