KATHMANDU: Classes in 93 community schools in Solukhumbu district have been suspended due to severe cold weather. Seven local governments in the area have declared winter holidays, citing the difficulty of continuing classes in such conditions.
Schools in Solukhumbu have been gradually closing since November because of the weather, according to Prakanda Neupane, the Information Officer for the Education Development and Coordination Unit. In the district, 93 of the 289 community schools have formally closed for the winter.
Except for Sotang Rural Municipality, all eight of Solukhumbu's local levels have instituted winter breaks for their community schools. Because of the severe weather, this action attempts to guarantee the comfort and safety of both staff and pupils.
Nawaraj Parajuli, who works at the Salleri Weather Station, said that temperatures in the district's highest areas have fallen as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. Even in the relatively lower areas, like Salleri, the temperature has fallen below freezing.
As local officials put students' safety first in the face of extreme cold, the decision to suspend classes emphasizes how the weather has affected education in the district.
