KATHMANDU: From a vehicle coming from Dhankuta, police in Dharan, Sunsari, confiscated 1,420 kg of marijuana. Around nine in the morning, authorities found forty-four sacks of the narcotic inside the vehicle, which had the registration number 1 Kha 4733. The people who were taken into custody were identified as being involved in the illicit transport: Bhupendra Rai, 41, from Shahid Bhumi Rural Municipality in Dhankuta, and Rajkumar Dahal, 34, from Sundar Haraicha Municipality in Morang.
The marijuana was intended for export to India, where it is reportedly sold at over Rs 20,000 per kilogram. The illegal cultivation of commercial marijuana occurs mainly around Chhintang in Dhankuta. The drug is typically transported from Dhankuta to the border areas of Morang and Sunsari before being smuggled into India during the night. The transporter of the marijuana reportedly earns Rs 2,000 per kilogram.
Police highlighted that the trafficking route and the high value of the drug make it an attractive venture for smugglers, despite the significant risks involved.
