KATHMANDU: Naresh Bhatta, charged with concealing the body of his wife, Mamata Kafle, has been ordered to remain in police custody with no bond. This decision follows disturbing evidence presented in court, including signs of pooled blood and missing knives. Bhatta's arraignment on Friday marked the latest development in the case, where he faces allegations of hiding a dead body.
Mamata, 28, has been missing for nearly a month and did not attend their baby daughter's first birthday. Bhatta was arrested at their Manassas Park home last Thursday. Despite the serious charge, Mamata's body has not been found. Evidence revealed in court included signs of blood in the main bedroom and bathroom, and indications that a body had been dragged. Large rolled-up carpets were also seen being loaded into a police van.
The prosecution presented evidence of Bhatta buying cleaning supplies and knives, with two of the knives now missing. His statements about Mamata's last known whereabouts were inconsistent with cellphone data showing her phone was active in Loudoun County after Bhatta claimed to have last seen her. The prosecution also highlighted discrepancies in Bhatta's account and the unusual purchase of cleaning supplies.
Bhatta's defense argued for his release, suggesting that purchasing cleaning supplies is not incriminating and challenging the evidence linking the blood to Mamata. The defense also contended that there was no direct proof of her being killed. Despite these arguments, the court decided to hold Bhatta without bail.
Mamata, a nurse, was reported missing after she failed to show up for work, which was unusual given her active social media presence and care for her child. Following Bhatta's arrest, their daughter was placed under the care of the Department of Social Services, and Mamata's mother received an emergency visa to care for the child. Funds are being raised for her travel expenses. The investigation has faced delays, but community confidence was restored after assurances from the police chief about the investigation's integrity. Mamata's financial accounts and phone have shown no activity since her disappearance.
