KATHMANDU: Forest fires have ravaged 155 locations across eight municipalities and rural municipalities in the district, resulting in the destruction of nearly 4,500 hectares of forest area over the past month. The Division Forest Office reported that Doramba Shailung rural municipality suffered the most significant losses and damage. Forest Officer Om Sagar Bhandari stated that the fires have caused damage to 155 community and leasehold forests, severely impacting biodiversity, including wildlife species. Tragically, two individuals have lost their lives to forest fires in the district this year.
In response to the crisis, local authorities have been actively raising awareness among the population about the devastating impact of forest fires. They have urged local communities to prioritize forest and wildlife conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of preserving these natural resources. Additionally, the administration has warned that setting fire to forests will result in legal action, with offenders facing criminal charges. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the risk of further damage and protect the environment for future generations.
