KATHMANDU: A Scorpio (Ba 16 Cha 3162) crashed on the Lamaha-Dhansar portion of the East-West Highway in Rautahat district on Tuesday morning, killing eight persons, including the driver, and injuring four more. The terrible event happened about 7:30 in the morning.
The car was carrying worshippers back to Siraha from the Bara district's Gadhimai festival. Held at Bariyarpur, Bara, every five years, this festival is a major cultural event that attracts sizable crowds from all across the region.
The 40-year-old driver, Shri Kumar Yadav, was one of the accident's victims, along with Sakuntala Debi Mahara (30), Urmila Mahara (30), Ram Kumar Mahara (50), Mahangi Debi Mahara (55), Larubati Debi Mahara (60), Ram Kumari Debi Mahara (60), and Fulmanti Debi Chamar (62). They all passed away at the scene from their injuries.
The injured passengers are being treated at a nearby medical facility, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Raj Kumar Rai of the Chandranigahpur Area Police Office. Their conditions are being continuously examined, he added.
At Chandranigahpur-4 in Rautahat, the Scorpio struck a tree along the highway, according to the police's preliminary investigations. The crash led to a significant number of casualties and serious damage to the vehicle.
Concerned about the incident, DSP Rai stressed how crucial it is to drive carefully on highways, especially on holidays and other busy days. Investigators are looking into what caused the accident.
