KATHMANDU: The Birgunj Customs Office handled the export of commodities valued at Rs 29.27 billion to different nations during the first half of the current fiscal year. Comparing this to the same time in the previous fiscal year, when exports were Rs 14.56 billion, shows a notable 100% rise.

The office's information officer, Amit Tiwari, said the increase in processed soybean and sunflower oil shipments to India is primarily to blame for the export boom. These goods have been a major contributor to the six-month rise in total exports.

The current fiscal year's first half saw a notable growth in export revenue as well, hitting Rs 176.6 million. There was a 103.81 million rupee rise in export revenue compared to the current fiscal year.

However, during the same six-month period, commodities valued at Rs 277.15 million were imported across the Birgunj border, indicating an increase in imports as well. This is a 6.45% increase over the Rs 260 million imported during the same period last year.

The increase in imports and exports shows how the Birgunj Customs Office has enabled the growth of trade activities. The increasing trend in trade volume emphasizes the border's importance as a key commercial transit point.

With processed items like soybean and sunflower oil contributing significantly to the current fiscal year's export performance, both the increase in imports and the growth in export revenue indicate encouraging changes in trade dynamics.
