(CNN): In the Kazakh city of Aktau, authorities reported that a passenger plane transporting 67 people from Azerbaijan to southern Russia crashed on Wednesday. Flying from Baku to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, the plane was operated by Azerbaijan Airlines.
About 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from Aktau, where the jet made an emergency landing, the crash happened. The airplane was on fire when rescue crews got there, according to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Rescue crews started working right once to put out the fire and evaluate the situation. According to the ministry, initial reports suggested that there were survivors among the passengers, but the precise number of fatalities and injuries was still being confirmed.
Twenty-five individuals survived the crash, according to authorities. Twenty-two of them were admitted to the hospital for treatment; however, the severity of their injuries was not made public.
Sixty-two passengers and five crew members were on board. Kazakhstan's transport ministry said the passengers included 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs, and 3 Kyrgyz nationals, based on early information.
In a social media post, Azerbaijan Airlines stated that they will continue to share details on the event as they become available. The airline offered assistance to the victims and their families after realizing how serious the situation was.
Investigations are being conducted to figure out the cause behind the crash. In order to better understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, local authorities and rescue services are still working on the scene, putting survivors' health first and obtaining information.
