KATHMANDU: In Chitwan district, five public schools have reported a zero pass rate in the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) 2080, according to results released by the National Examination Board on Thursday. Bhumilal Subedi, head of the Education Development and Coordination Unit in Chitwan, disclosed that three schools from Ichchha Kamana Rural Municipality, and one each from Bharatpur Metropolitan City and Rapti Municipality, recorded no students passing the exam.
Specifically, Dhunge Secondary School, Majhgaun; Ramnagar Secondary School in Bharatpur Metropolitan City; and Ganesh Secondary School in Deuralitar, Rapti Municipality, were among those with zero pass rates. These schools primarily cater to students from marginalized communities like the Chepang, with Dhunge and Ramnagar having 18 and 20 students appearing for the exam respectively, while Ganesh Secondary had 20 students.
In contrast, Narayani Model Secondary School in Chitwan achieved the highest pass rate at 90 percent, highlighting disparities between institutional and community schools. Subedi noted that while not all schools have released their grades publicly, comparisons based on incomplete data or those involving entrance exam results may not be appropriate.
Overall, the Chitwan district saw a pass percentage of 56 percent in this year's SEE, with 4,041 out of 10,832 students passing. Despite a lower number of passers compared to previous years, Subedi pointed out qualitative improvements, including an increase in students achieving top grades. Specifically, 16 students attained A+ grades, up from six last year, and 1,692 students achieved an A grade, marking an increase of 481 students from the previous year.
Community schools did not fare as well as institutional schools did in terms of GPA scores; just two community schools' pupils were able to obtain a perfect 4.0 GPA. Pupils who did not pass may choose to take the August 2 start date of the Grade Improvement Examination (Supplementary Examination).
