Chinese national arrested in Kathmandu with 6 kilograms of gold

KATHMANDU: Last night, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) apprehended a Chinese national in Kapan, seizing approximately 6 kilograms of gold and NPR 4.8 million in cash. The details regarding the identity of the detained Chinese individual have been withheld by the CIB, pending further investigation into the weight and origins of the confiscated gold.


According to undisclosed sources, the arrested Chinese national was previously wanted by law enforcement for suspected involvement in gold smuggling activities. Additionally, in parallel operations, authorities in New Delhi, India, have arrested two individuals under suspicion of their connection to gold smuggling operations. Efforts are underway to facilitate their repatriation to Nepal for subsequent legal procedures.


The CIB's investigative efforts have yielded significant progress, resulting in the seizure of a total of 60 kilograms of gold and electronic cigarettes through various channels. Thus far, the bureau has apprehended 20 individuals allegedly linked to these smuggling endeavors. Investigations remain ongoing as the CIB continues to explore additional instances of gold smuggling, encompassing both traditional and modern smuggling methodologies.
