KATHMANDU: The extension work on the Narayanghat-Butwal road segment has been suspended owing to persistent rain, making it impossible to continue with building works. Ashish Thapa Magar, Project Chief of the Eastern Section of the Narayanghat-Butwal Road Expansion Project, indicated that rather than extending the road, efforts are currently being directed toward improving traffic flow.
Magar emphasized the current priority is to manage traffic disruptions caused by rain-related challenges. This involves deploying manpower and equipment from the construction company to address issues such as potholes, slippery roads, and debris from landslides.
Since the beginning of the monsoon season, building resources have been steadily curtailed during the last week. The project, which began in January 2019 with an intended goal of completion in three and a half years, has only made 52 percent physical progress thus far. The China State Engineering Corporation Limited manages the eastern leg of the 114-kilometer Narayanghat-Butwal road, which covers 65 kilometers.
The construction business faces a deadline extension on July 23, 2024, which will mark the conclusion of its second extended term. Magar stated that the corporation has requested a further one-year extension for a variety of reasons, including delays caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, delayed clearances for tree cutting, and difficulty with moving electrical poles.
The construction business has sought an extension, and discussions are underway to decide the right length. Once a suggestion has been completed with the project consultant, it will be presented to the ministry for approval. However, the actual number of days for the extension has not yet been determined, requiring further deliberation and approval processes.
