KATHMANDU: Heavy rains in Kailali have led to severe flooding, submerging numerous areas such as Bhajani, Joshipur, Janaki, Ghodaghodi, and Gouriganga. Shivraj Joshi, the District Administration Office's Information Officer, reports that more than 1,700 people have been impacted by the flooding of over 500 homes. Bhajani has been particularly hard hit, with more than 400 houses flooded, while areas in Hasuliya and Gauriganga are also facing rising water levels. Some residents have taken refuge at the local ward office.
Lokmaya Chaudhary, 42, was tragically swept away in an awful occurrence when she tried to escape her home in Kailali's Ward 5, Bayanpur. She was fortunately saved, and in Dhangadhi's Nisarga Hospital, she is still undergoing therapy. In the meantime, there is no indication that the region's minor rivers will stop receiving more water, and the amount of rainfall is increasing.
While there is still a strong chance of more flooding, the District Administration Office has issued warnings to residents in high-risk regions and advised them to relocate to safer areas. With assistance from the local police, armed police, communities, and municipalities, rescue operations are still underway. Residents in riverine and flood-prone areas have also been forewarned by the Weather Forecasting Division about the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.
