KATHMANDU: The Madhes Province has experienced major damage from recent flooding, totaling to around Rs 804 million and 500 thousand. In the Rautahat area, where flooding from the swelling Bagmati, Lal Bakaiya, Jhajh, Lamaha, and Gujara rivers has caused damages of over Rs 195 million, the situation has been especially dire.
Flooding from the Balan, Triyuga, and Mahuli rivulets has also caused major losses in the Saptari district, with damages topping Rs 128 million. Floods from the Ratu, Charnath, Kamala, Jallad, Aurahi, Khahare, and Badahari rivulets have damaged 95 million rupees worth of property in Dhanusha.
In Sarlahi district, additional effects have been reported, resulting in damages of Rs 92.5 million due to flooding produced by the Bagmati and Lakhanehi rivulets. Bara, which has lost Rs 85 million; Siraha, which has experienced damages of Rs 79 million; Mahottari, which has lost Rs 75 million; and Parsa, which has sustained damages above Rs 55 million, are among the other afflicted districts.
In response to the massive devastation caused by the flooding, the Madhes province administration has allocated Rs 80 million for the maintenance and repair of damaged infrastructure. Funding for this project is intended to address the disaster's immediate needs.
The extensive devastation in several regions demonstrates the serious effects of flooding on the infrastructure and local populations in the province of Madhes. Continued monitoring and support will be necessary to aid recovery efforts.
