President emphasizes press freedom's role in democratic consolidation

KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel emphasized the critical role of an impartial, independent, and robust press in consolidating the democratic system. Speaking at an event organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to commemorate the Ninth National Journalism Day 2081 at Shital Niwas, he underscored press freedom as a vital component of democratization efforts within society.

Acknowledging the significant role of the press sector in promoting national interests through journalistic principles and professionalism, the Head of State expressed confidence in the commitment of journalists to enhance public trust in the press. He urged for a focus on professionalism, responsibility, and societal accountability through investigative journalism and innovation.

President Paudel highlighted the historic contribution of the Nepali press fraternity in overthrowing autocratic rule and establishing a federal democratic republic. He emphasized that fair and independent journalism thrives within a democratic system, urging journalists to play an active role in strengthening democracy and fostering public trust in the system.

Recognizing the challenges posed by the proliferation of information technology, social media, and the spread of false information, President Paudel expressed optimism in the Nepali press's ability to provide accurate and factual information to the public. He encouraged journalists to confront these challenges effectively and uphold the integrity of journalism.

During the event, Senior Journalist Honors were conferred upon Prateek Pradhan and Tribhuvan Poudel (posthumously), while the National Journalism Award 2080 was presented to Menaka Chaudhary, Suryamani Gautam, Bhawani Singh Ayer, Deepak Gyawali, Tripti Shahi, and Prem Bahadur Karki Dholi (Rajan KD).
