KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress, the primary opposition party, has accused the government of using its power and state resources to protect Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane from scrutiny in a cooperative fraud case.

Following his participation in a meeting of key political leaders convened by Speaker Devraj Ghimire on Tuesday, Ramesh Lekhak, the chief whip of Nepali Congress, asserted that the government was employing its authority and resources to shield Lamichhane.

Lekhak highlighted that a government institution's investigation had already uncovered that Lamichhane, during his tenure as the managing director at Gorkha Media Network, acquired loans from cooperatives without adhering to legal procedures.

Despite substantial evidence against Lamichhane in the cooperative fraud case, Lekhak emphasized that the government was sparing no effort to protect him.

He reiterated Nepali Congress's unwavering demand for the establishment of a parliamentary committee to probe Lamichhane's involvement in the case, indicating their firm stance on the matter.
