The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, recently met with Nepal's Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, in New York. During their talk, Minister Rana highlighted Nepal's longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, which have been vital in many crisis areas throughout the world. She emphasized how important it is to give Nepali officers higher-level positions in these missions.
Minister Rana urged the UN to name a Nepali military commander to a high position in recognition of Nepal's important contribution to fostering peace. With this request, Nepal's vast experience in the field will be acknowledged and its expertise will be further integrated into the leadership of UN peacekeeping operations.
Separate conversations were held between Minister Rana and Rabab Fatima, the UN High Representative for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs). They talked on how they both felt that addressing climate change was urgently necessary and about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In her capacity as the head of the global coordinating bureau for LDCs, she declared that Nepal is dedicated to advancing the interests of these nations taken together.
Furthermore, Minister Rana and Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić inked a deal during the 79th UN General Assembly. In an effort to promote diplomatic relations, this agreement grants visa waivers for holders of official and diplomatic passports from both nations.
Minister Rana met with Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain, earlier in her tour, and they talked about strengthening diplomatic ties. Having been founded in 1968, the connection between Nepal and Spain has a long history, and both leaders have stated that they would like to see it grow even stronger.
Meetings with Minister Rana at the UN are a good example of Nepal's aggressive foreign policy, particularly in terms of showcasing its participation in global peacekeeping and development initiatives. These engagements show Nepal's commitment to working with international partners to address pressing global concerns.
By means of these negotiations and accords, Nepal hopes to strengthen its standing in international organizations and cultivate cooperative ties with other nations, underscoring the country's strategic diplomatic endeavors on the international scene.
