Monsoon death toll reaches 70 due to floods and landslides across Nepal

KATHMANDU: According to the Police Headquarters, as of Monday morning, the number of people killed in floods and landslides caused by the ongoing monsoon rains had risen to 70, while five people were still unaccounted for. According to Central Police Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki, 86 persons have been hurt in various instances around Nepal since June 10. In nearby hospitals, the injured are presently undergoing medical care.


During this time, Nepal has recorded 966 occurrences of floods and landslides, causing damage to 86 dwellings and the loss of 335 animals. The continuous torrential downpour has seriously disrupted daily life across the country. In response to the crisis, 4,790 police personnel have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.


These monsoon-related calamities are expected to have cost Rs 95,674,250 in financial terms. While Nepal continues to deal with the difficulties brought on by these natural calamities, efforts to control and lessen the effects of the current monsoon season are still vital.
