KATHMANDU: Chief Minister (CM) Saroj Kumar Yadav of Madhesh Province is set to undergo a confidence vote today, Wednesday, marking the fifth time he seeks affirmation from the provincial assembly. This move comes after the recent withdrawal of support from the CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), and CPN (Unified Socialist) parties, altering the political landscape. According to constitutional provisions, CM Yadav must seek a vote of confidence within 30 days following the withdrawal of any coalition partner's support.
The provincial assembly is scheduled to convene at 3 PM, where CM Yadav will once again seek a vote of confidence. This marks his fifth attempt at securing confidence from the assembly. Despite successfully obtaining confidence votes four times previously, CM Yadav faces a more challenging scenario this time due to the withdrawal of support from key coalition partners.
CM Yadav's party, the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, holds 19 seats, and with the support of 22 Nepali Congress lawmakers, he could secure a total of 41 votes. However, to win the confidence vote in the 107-member provincial assembly, he needs a majority of 54 votes. With uncertainties regarding support from other parties, including the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, the outcome remains uncertain.
Several parties, including the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, Nepal Sangiya Samajbadi Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, have yet to confirm their stance. Their decisions could significantly impact the confidence vote and the political future of CM Yadav's government in Madhesh Province.
