KATHMANDU: According to reports, the 11 open diplomatic positions in Nepal would have ambassadors appointed by the three main coalition parties running the nation, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN-UML, and Rastriya Swatantra Party. Following a meeting on Thursday night at Singha Durbar, which included the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the UML's KP Sharma Oli, and the RSP's Rabi Lamichhane, the accord was sealed.
Accordingly, the agreement has a provision for CPN-UML to nominate ambassadors in eight of the vacant posts, while RSP will appoint ambassadors for two, and the Maoist Center in one. The decision was made soon after the government recalled 11 ambassadors serving in various countries recently, including significant diplomatic posts such as India, the USA, the UK, South Korea, and others.
These 11 ambassadors were appointed during the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government with the Nepali Congress as a constituent of the ruling coalition. The Cabinet decision to recall them opens up the scope for realignment of diplomatic representation by the incumbent coalition government in keeping with its political mandate and priorities.
This shuffling of ambassadors shows that the government is serious about bringing about harmony between its current policies and objectives and its diplomatic representation. The appointment process shows a united effort on the part of ruling alliance parties in strategizing the filling of key diplomatic positions crucial for Nepal's international relations and interests.
