KATHMANDU: Janata Samajbadi Party of Nepal has taken a significant decision to withdraw its support from the Lumbini provincial government. The statement issued says the JSP is going to sit in the opposition bench from immediate effect. The chief minister Jokh Bahadur Mahara of CPN led provincial government though, with this withdrawal of JSP support, will retain the majority in the assembly.
CM Mahara continues at the helm with the support of a coalition that includes 29 lawmakers from the CPN-UML, 10 from the Maoist Centre, four from the Nagarik Unmukti Party, two from the Janata Samajbadi Party, one from the CPN-Unified Socialist, and one independent lawmaker. Their collective strength is 47 lawmakers in the 87-member provincial assembly—way above the majority threshold of 44 seats needed to be in power.
Even though the JSP has decided to side with the opposition bench, Chief Minister Mahara still retains his coalition intact and guarantees not only the stability of the provincial government in Lumbini but also the whole cabinet. This political development shows continuous dynamics within the provincial governance of Nepal, representing the time-bound complexities and time-bound alliances that become very instrumental in holding on to administrative stability.
