KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has called for Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” to resign to facilitate a change in leadership, as stated by UML leader Pradip Gyawali. Gyawali emphasized that if PM Dahal does not step down by Wednesday evening, UML ministers will collectively resign and withdraw their support from the government.

Gyawali clarified that under an agreement between the UML and Nepali Congress (NC), they have urged PM Dahal to make way for the formation of a new government under Article 76 (2) of the Constitution by the specified deadline. He indicated that while the current agreement is between the NC and UML, efforts will be made to form a national consensus government.

Moreover, the UML has extended invitations to other political parties to join in forming this new government, with Chairman KP Oli slated to lead initially, per the terms of the agreement with the NC. This proposed government of national consensus aims to integrate various political stakeholders.

Following the recall of ministers, the CPN-UML plans to convene a meeting to decide their next steps based on the evolving political situation. The agreement between the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, finalized late Monday night, outlines the allocation of ministries, provincial leadership roles, and a rotational arrangement for government leadership.

During Chairman Oli’s initial tenure, the UML is set to hold nine ministries, including significant portfolios like Prime Minister and Finance Minister, while the Nepali Congress will oversee ten ministries, including Home Ministry responsibilities. The agreement also designates governance responsibilities across various provinces, with specific provinces assigned to each party.

The formal signing of this agreement occurred at midnight on Monday, following the completion of a draft agreement by lower-level party leaders at a hotel in Lalitpur.
