Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stressed the importance of natural healthcare practices for preventing illnesses and lowering antibiotic use, which contributes to the global fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He delivered his remarks during the 79th United Nations General Assembly's High-Level Meeting on AMR.
"Investing in the Present and Securing Our Future Together," the theme of the AMR session, was stepping up national, international, and regional efforts to combat AMR. PM Oli highlighted that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major global health risk and that Nepal is dedicated to tackling the problem by using a 'One Health' approach.
Nepal has recognized Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) as a critical public health concern, and the country's 2019 National Health Policy emphasizes this dedication by stressing the significance of efficient antibiotic control and administration. PM Oli declared that in order to give clear guidance in the fight against AMR, Nepal has created a National Action Plan on the disease and put into practice National Antibiotic Treatment Guidelines.
Prime Minister Oli did accept that addressing the global problem of AMR will require more than just national initiatives. To properly handle the situation, he called for robust international coordination and cooperation.
He made four main action recommendations:
(1) establish robust regulatory frameworks and surveillance systems
(2) promote international collaboration in the search for new antibiotics, complementary therapies, and innovative solutions
(3) invest in health infrastructure, research, and development
(4) support organic farming and other sustainable agricultural practices.
PM Oli underlined that enough investment in infrastructure and health systems is required to help the battle against AMR. He also underlined how important it is to use sustainable farming practices in order to protect the environment and improve food safety and health.
In order to guarantee the appropriate and responsible use of antimicrobials across numerous industries, PM Oli further promoted enhanced regulation and surveillance protocols.
PM Oli drew attention to Nepal's "Nirogi Nepal - Healthy Nepal" initiative, which aims to lower the country's antibiotic use and enhance the general health of its citizens. He underlined the need of working together to create a future that is healthier and more sustainable.
