There were at least 94 fatalities and 50 injuries from a horrific petrol truck crash and explosion that happened late Tuesday in Jigawa State, northern Nigeria. A police official said the driver lost control of the car, which led to the collision.
The catastrophe happened at Majia town, which is a part of the Taura local government region, around 530 kilometers (329 miles) north of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Locals had gathered to get fuel from the wrecked tanker, which contributed to the high death toll.
For medical attention, the injured were taken to nearby hospitals in the towns of Hadejia and Ringim. Later in the day, the deceased will have a mass funeral in response to the tragedy.
Potholes and badly maintained roads are a big issue in Nigeria, where they cause several accidents that end in fatalities each year. The enduring dangers associated with the country's transportation infrastructure are brought to light by this occurrence.
This is not an unusual incident; at least 48 people were killed in a similar explosion involving a petrol tanker in north-central Nigeria just last month. When the tanker struck another truck transporting passengers and cattle, it started a fire that spread to other cars.
