KATHMANDU: During the Nepali month of Shrawan, which runs from mid-July to mid-August, the Birgunj Customs Office got Rs 12.16 billion in income. This is 27.89% less than the Rs 16.86 billion target. Since Shawan is normally not a month with a lot of foreign trade, the revenue collected accounts for 72.11 percent of the target, which is good.
The Birgunj Customs Office received Rs 11.87 billion in income during the current fiscal year, which is a slight gain over the previous one when it set a target of Rs 15.62 billion. Although imports through the Birgunj customs point totaled Rs 46.59 billion in imported items, they fell by 3.53% from the same time the previous year.
Domestic exports processed through the customs office rose by 7.16 percent despite the decline in imports. Exports to Shrawan in the current fiscal year totaled Rs 2.67 billion, compared to Rs 2.47 billion the year before. This suggests that domestic trade activity are trending positively.
At the Birgunj Customs Office, imports accounted for 95% of total traffic, while exports made up 5%. The numbers demonstrate how important imports are to the customs office's ability to generate income from commerce.
