News Corp. strikes landmark deal with OpenAI for content sharing

News Corp. has entered a multiyear partnership with OpenAI to provide news content for both training purposes and answering user queries. This collaboration includes access to current and archived material from major News Corp. publications like The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and New York Post, as well as Australian newspapers such as The Daily Telegraph.

While the specifics of the deal’s duration and financial terms remain undisclosed, sources suggest it could be worth over $250 million over five years. OpenAI has established similar content-sharing agreements with other prominent media companies, including The Associated Press, Germany’s Axel Springer, Spain’s Prisa Media, France’s Le Monde, and the London-based Financial Times.

Unlike most deals that focus solely on content for training AI models, the News Corp. agreement allows OpenAI to use the news content to respond to user questions. This comes as Google is also modifying its search engines to provide more direct answers to user queries, rather than just directing them to articles from news organizations.
