KATHMANDU: Calls for mid-term elections in Koshi Province within the Nepali Congress (NC) are gaining momentum, with party leader Surmaraj Rai leading the charge. Rai, a former MP, insists that the NC should advocate for mid-term elections in Koshi without any hesitation or internal discord, viewing it as a strategic political move for the party. He believes that embracing the democratic process and holding mid-term elections would provide an opportunity for the party to comprehensively address the provisions of Article 168(5) of the Constitution in the state.
The political landscape in Koshi Province remains tumultuous, fueling the growing demand within the Nepali Congress for mid-term elections. The recent formation of the government under Kedar Karki, in line with Article 168(5) of the Constitution, has raised questions about whether the government should revert to Article 2 or dissolve the Provincial Assembly. Amidst this uncertainty, both the CPN-UML and Maoist Center have expressed intentions to revert to Article 168 and present their claims for the Chief Minister position.
In response to the evolving situation, Province Chief Parshuram Khapung has called for claims to be submitted by 5 pm on Friday, in accordance with clause 5. As the debate intensifies and political dynamics continue to shift, the push for mid-term elections in Koshi Province underscores the complexities and challenges facing the Nepali Congress and the broader political landscape in Nepal.
