KATHMANDU: On Saturday night, a fire broke out in a baby care center, resulting in the loss of seven infants, according to a fire service officer in India's capital. Rescuers managed to transport 12 newborns from the center to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, five of them succumbed to smoke inhalation, as reported by fire officer Atul Garg. The remaining five infants are undergoing treatment for smoke inhalation.
The fire, which occurred on the first floor of the center located in the Vivek Vihar district of east Delhi, was brought under control within about an hour, stated Suresh Kumar, another fire officer. Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway to determine its origin and circumstances.
This tragic incident follows another devastating fire earlier on Saturday in the city of Rajkot in Gujarat state, western India, where at least 27 individuals lost their lives at a crowded amusement park. The frequency of such fires underscores the pressing issue of building safety in India, where adherence to building laws and safety regulations is often neglected by builders and residents alike.
