KATHMANDU: The Land Management and Cooperative Registrar’s Office in Surkhet reports that 311 cooperatives are currently registered, with a total capital reaching Rs 15 billion. These cooperatives, which operate across entire districts and more than two rural municipalities, have a combined share capital of Rs 15 billion. The Registrar, Khum Prasad Subedi, highlighted that the cooperatives span various sectors including savings and credit, agriculture, and social entrepreneurship.
Cooperatives in the ten districts that make up the province of Karnali have amassed deposits of Rs 8.2 billion and share capital of Rs 1.75 billion. They have lent out Rs 11.5 billion in total, and they have Rs 714 million in reserve money. A little over 1,500 people are employed by the cooperative industry.
The cooperatives cover diverse areas such as vegetable seed production, solar energy, bee-keeping, and health. The distribution of cooperatives across the districts includes 102 in Surkhet, 37 in Dailekh, 34 in Jumla, and several others in districts like Kalikot, Jajarkot, and Salyan.
